Johnny Canuck announcement

Well, it looks like Moonstone Books is gearing up to start promoting the book, so I can finally publicly say what my project with them is--Johnny Canuck and the Guardians of the Northern Lights!  It's being written by comic book kung fu master (and my former instructor) Ty Templeton, with colours by Keiren Smith and painted covers by Jason Edmiston.  Oh, and pencils, inks, and character designs by me.  This guy, right here.

Johnny Canuck is a revival of the "Canadian Whites", which is a nickname for the Canadian pulp and superhero comics that popped up during World War II when American comic supplies were cut off in the Great White North.  Now Johnny Canuck, Blackwing, Trick Merlin, Red Rogue, Zor the Mighty, Freelance and others are reimagined and revamped and thrown into the post-apocalyptic near future for your four colour enjoyement. Yeah!

3 issues, Launching this July, gods willing.  I'll post some pages sometime, or maybe some process stuff, when we figure out what to preview.

I believe I caught mention of the book on some comic related web-site late last summer.

Then a few weeks later I stopped by what I guess was Ty Templeton's spot at Fan Expo 2009 and saw a cover and some sketches. He wasn't there at the time, but his wife thought it would be solicited late last year.

A few months later, I was going through Previews trying to remember the title and artist, but I'd forgotten it. It's been haunting me forever.

I finally came across the title on Moonstone's website, a couple of days ago.

Has the story evolved since the summer? Why has it taken so long to come to press?

I can't say much about the story, but there are 2 issues and then some are sitting in the can. July is just when Moonstone ended up having room in their publishing schedule to promote it properly and give it a good push. 3 issues monthly after that, if it does well there could be more.

As a Vermonter since the age of 10, I had the unique oppurtunity to be the recipient of Canadian culture during the late 70's-on. So I had the chance to see CAN tv, and read comics like Captain Canuck and consequently, learn about the Canadian comics industry too- so It's cool to see a revival of these lost characters of my neighbors. I hope you have great success!

I can't wait for this. I saw the promo art at the FanExpo with Ty. He said he was hoping to start soliciting last november but it didn't happen I guess. So cool to know it is still in the works.

I really appreciate the interest guys--come back from time to time between now and the launch, as I'll be posting more previews, pinups, sketches and so forth related to the project.

Hi David. We've never met but I'm an old pal of Ty's who's writing something for the back of the book. I have seen a bunch of the pages and you're doing a cracking good job on your big debut!
